For the years before I went into business for myself as an entrepreneur, I was an Employee for three different Life Insurance companies, as an Agent, Sales Manager and Regional Sales Manager. Since I wanted to work for my clients instead of a Life Insurance Company, I needed to leave the employee world to become an Employer. I started my business in 1999.

Since my business is a people business, my purpose is to help clients and their businesses become financially secure, minimize their business financial risks, help them exit their business at the highest price, and make sure taxes on the exit transaction are kept to the minimum.

Biggest Challenge

This business requires lot of money in Research and Development to develop effective and Quality products. In teeth whitening space, there are many established companies such as Colgate, Crest and other brands with mega size budgets for marketing with large market share. We were able to separate our products and penetrate the market by offering our products with non-harmful ingredients for their regular as well as sensitive teeth.  We invested over $1 Million of our money to develop and market our products.

Recent Success

We have been written up in major magazines as wonderful revolutionary product for teeth whitening safely and naturally. We started selling in Amazon and quickly built up $100,000 annual run rate. We contacted Macys and Target and they immediately agreed to add our products on their online marketplace. One major dental distributor agreed to take on our products to distribute to dental offices and that has already reached $100,000 annual run rate. We signed up a distributor to sell our products in Hong Kong and China and have already achieved a sale of over $50,000 in first year of business.

Meet Cheryl Honig, Founder/Baker of The Blessed Braid

I started my business to give challah eaters in Orange County better challah than what is currently available.  After tasting many challahs at religious events, and purchasing challah at local grocery stores, I knew that my homemade challah was tastier, more beautiful, and healthier.  I have been baking challah for decades, but formed my business in November 2019.

Our Ideal Customers

My customers are challah eaters, foodies, religious/nonreligious Jews, and people who like bread! While Jewish people typically know and understand what challah is, I find that non-Jews also are attracted to challah. Many people I speak with have grown up enjoying challah, and have a story to tell about their memories with challah. My business helps my customers experience a food they associate with their childhood, and their family members. My business evokes warm memories, and brings to mind aromas of their childhood homes. Many of my customers use challah, and the celebration of Shabbat as their link to Judaism. Challah is a very meaningful and impactful food, and is an important symbol that brings people together.

Biggest Challenge

My biggest challenge was to make the decision to turn my passion for challah into a business. I hesitated for a year while contemplating the pros and cons of starting a business. I was very confident in my product, and its superiority over store bought challahs, but the process of creating a legal food business in my home overwhelmed me. Once I decided to move forward, taking the process one step at a time, I gained momentum, and my actions and decision making started to flow freely.

 

Recent Success

Prior to the shelter in place order, I sold my challah at Open Market OC. I passed out samples to shoppers, and they chose a challah from my store front display to purchase. While passing out samples, I had many shoppers recount their story of growing up eating challah. One man said his mother made challah every week, but she passed away several years ago, and he started to tear up with the memories that my challah helped him to experience. That was a beautiful moment. Another shopper said to me that he can’t find challah this good in any store. I love to hear that!

How We Keep Going

Exclamations of joy and delight upon tasting my challah keep me going. Every time a customer enjoys what I baked, it is affirmation that I need to continue to spread the word, and let people know The Blessed Braid exists. My key purpose is to establish a customer base, and then create a Kosher bakery in Orange County.

Community First

My business brings delicious, beautiful, and healthy challah bread to Orange County. My challah has no dairy, and no preservatives. It is homemade, and hand-braided, and delivered free to most areas of Orange County. My business elevates that status of challah as an important symbol of the Jewish religion

In Five Years…

I see my business becoming a Kosher bakery, and expanding to include a couple more flavors of challah, and traditional Jewish baked goods like hamantaschen, rugelah, honey cake, and kamishbrot. I also want to offer cookies, cakes, and cupcakes so Jews who keep Kosher can purchase these items at a local Kosher bakery instead of traveling to a Kosher bakery in Los Angeles.
I will continue to pursue Open Market OC, Business Network International ( I am a member of the Strategic Alliance 2.0 chapter), the Globe Newspaper of Laguna Woods Village (I am a resident of Laguna Woods), social media, and friends and family to expose my business and challah to potential customers. I will continue to watch the faces of, and listen to the words of people who taste my challah. I will continue to be receptive to the suggestions and comments of experienced business people.

I am inspired as I drive around and see many small businesses.  Someone had to have an idea to start that business.  They had to make the decisions, and take the steps that I have to take.  If they can do it, I can too!

Don’t get overwhelmed with everything you have to do to start a business.
Be very organized, and make a list of tasks, and prioritize that list. Start at the top of the list, and choose just one task. Complete it. Give yourself a pat on the back, then tackle the next task. Keep going like this, and before you know it, your tasks will be accomplished. Also, keep this in mind…. Once you start learning about something, and the necessary steps to achieve it, you will notice that it isn’t as difficult as you first thought.

I started Steadman & Associates, Inc. in 1989 from a two-bedroom apartment in Huntington Beach. Steadman & Associates, Inc. was formed as a manufacturer’s rep company, we evolved to a full fluid sealing distributorship and named it AS&P (American Seal & Packing) in 1994. We then expanded into manufacturing gaskets and seals in house to improve our service and delivery time.

I wanted to remain in the seal industry and to stay in California. Due to a reduction in force by Garlock, to accomplish those goals required that I create my own company. 31 years later, I’m still glad I did.

Due to the loss of a couple major offshore accounts, we needed to recreate and repair our online presence. Over the past 2 years, we have recaptured positioning and sales volume.

I started Blu Diamond Capital in 2012 to support commercial tenants seeking retail, industrial, and office spaces. I also felt that these smaller clients would benefit from the strategic real estate, finance and business solutions.

Too many entrepreneurs were not in a profit/loss role for their prior employer, therefore, they lack the understanding of what is now required to become successful entrepreneurs. They make so many mistakes around capital, capacity, and in some cases customer acquisition and retentions strategies.

My Biggest Challenge

Losing everything I had worked extremely hard to build.

My biggest challenge was after building a $250MM – capitalized billings valued firm – by way of a joint venture, and then having my JV minority shareholders commit fraud and steal revenues that my firm had earned which forced me into several years of litigation that eventually I had to let go due to the extreme costs.

I was devastated. I did not realize that some people are willing to lose to make sure you lose.

I had not imagined that all of my hard work would result in theft rather than a mistake I made. It was a tough lesson to learn. A UCLA leader helped me see the light.

My biggest takeaway is that after that period whenever I entertain a strategic alliance or joint venture, I make sure that we “date before we marry” – meaning that we create a joint project where our firms remain separate until we can determine that our visions and missions are aligned. If and when we establish that we share common interests, I will then entertain a more formal legal structure.

This approach has helped me to avoid a lot of missteps and to understand that what people say and do are not always consistent.

I also learned the importance of keeping a balanced life where I work and play hard. Life is more than my business.

Recent Personal Success

     During the economic downturn in 2008-10, I was an executive and consultant working with several developers. I also started teaching as an adjunct professor and realized that each time I was assigned a class, I needed to revise the curriculum to make it more relevant. Yet, the tenured professors, mostly PhDs seemed to focus on the hierarchy which place more value on other PhDs. So, I started my doctoral studies and graduated with Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree and was accepted into law school the night before my graduation.

I always wanted to attend law school and wasn’t as interested in the DBA, but now instead of just one doctorate degree, I’ll have two once I complete the Juris Doctorate.

These educational pursuits further both my ability to structure specific deals, especially in the equity space as my only method for compensation is by assuming the legal role or operating a securities brokerage. Or when it comes to the various business negotiations and contracts which must be understood and completed to consummate transactions.

My dream since I was a nine-year old child was to become a successful international business tycoon. Through my work I have continued to build and add value to clients. It is said that if you can deliver value to enough people, you will realize the benefits of a successful growth firm.

I am motivated to help my clients launch, grow, and exit their ventures successfully! This means helping them navigate the capital, capacity, and customer requirements at each phase of development.

Each for a different reason, but the similar core is that they are mavericks and seem to relish those talents and not apologize for seeing things through a different lens. They have been able to continue their vision across multiple sectors. This confirms that my vision of “doing the same thing across sectors” is real and can be a successful business strategy.

I too am a maverick and often gain inspiration to be comfortable in my own skin. 

Continue to learn. Stay open and pay attention to market trends, constantly know and study your business markets, understand the lifecycle of the firm you’re operating, and notice when it’s time to pivot.

Don’t be afraid to ask for advice. Asking for advice is not a shameful act, but rather an act demonstrating that you are open to new insight beyond your own. You may have become blind to some parts of your business and a fresh perspective can contribute to your next growth cycle.

Be willing to look beyond the group think and limitations which typically inhabit organizations and prevent future growth. If everyone agrees with all of your thoughts and ideas, you are in danger of making major mistakes.

Embrace diverse thoughts and ideas, be willing to debate and uncover solutions you would have never considered or revealed on your own. Don’t allow your ego to cause you to lose the war.

Meet  Stuart Lawson, NAV Digital Marketing Firm 

In 2008, I jumped from temporary part-time gigs that didn’t pay very well, decided to teach myself how to code websites and started a company that would help entrepreneurs with similar goals. Shortly thereafter, I  started Sundial to help small businesses with marketing, websites and branding. Now in 2020, Sundial has become NAV Firm.

Our Ideal Customers

Our customers are typically small businesses, startups, or entrepreneurs in the early stages of their business, just as I was before, or small business owners looking to expand with a new project. Instead of hiring many freelancers or experts in each different area, you could hire NAV Firm to complete all the digital marketing related tasks. I see a lot of customers trying to get by who don’t have critical marketing assets when they really should have them. NAV Firm focuses on a cohesive brand identity in all aspects of marketing.

 Biggest Challenge

In 2018, I had serious clinical depression and severe anxiety. This was definitely the most difficult period I’ve ever experienced. I sought medical attention and obtained the help I needed to get through it. I recommend anyone going through depression and anxiety to talk to your doctor about it as soon as possible because they can help.

Recent Success

Princeton SSD wanted to expand their marketing and contacted me; they were looking to showcase their Industrial Solid-State Drive technology and I helped design and implement their website. Since I worked with them, they’ve added a lot more to their catalog and their business has grown further.

How We Keep Going

I love the idea of helping a project become a success and providing value; no matter how small or how big the project is, I get highly invested. The key purpose of NAV Firm is to help bring a project direction and cohesion when orchestrating a marketing campaign.

Community First

Besides helping with local event marketing, I believe that small businesses and entrepreneurs are a highly valuable aspect of the local community. In helping them with marketing I believe I can further help the local community thrive.

In Five Years…

I think NAV Firm will cruise along. I don’t expect rapid growth, but I do expect it to expand slowly over the next five years. I hope we can bring on board more clients and help them navigate the world of online marketing.

I am inspired most by social entrepreneurs and people like Manoj Bhargava. I definitely recommend watching this film: Billions in Change where he took a small product and marketed it well, then used the money to further help communities in great but unexpected ways.

Meet Nancey Kinney, Naturopath, Clinical Nutritionist – Natural Health Centre

I have a very curious and investigative personality.  I like knowing “Why” something happens ~ what causes it, since unless we know that, it can’t be fixed. And I have always been naturally intuitive which serves me well in my practice.

My business has had many stages.  From 1994 to 2007, I was a marriage and family counselor working with couples, individuals and neurological disorders such as ADD, ADHD, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, etc. This timeframe included Neurofeedback and nutritional support for my clients as well as beginning naturopathy.  I got certified in EEG Neurofeedback and worked in a Stroke Rehab center for about a year, and later incorporated that into my business as it made it easy to help with diagnosing and treating ADD, OC, etc. 

In 1997, I started taking nutrition classes from some of the top supplement companies and finally enrolled in a program to get my Naturopathic Degree in 2001 and a Certification in Nutritional Counseling and Massage Therapy. In 1999, I purchased a German Energy machine made for measuring the conductivity of the meridians of the body (think acupuncture, but without the needles.)  By simply touching the sides of the finger and toenails, I obtain a conductivity reading on the corresponding organ system, i.e.  Lymph, Lungs, Nervous System, etc. I can even test supplements on the meridians to see which the best is to use.  Much more accurate than muscle testing and since it is true bio resonance, it can feed energy back into the body.

During this same timeframe, I added Heavy Metal Testing, Saliva Hormone Testing, Microbiome Testing and in 2007, I gave up my practice of psychotherapy altogether as I could do so much more with nutrition and supplements and my machines. 

Our Customers

Most of my clients, about 95%, are women from the ages of 20 to 85+.  Women go through so many stages in their lives from bringing up children, taking care of elderly parents and grandchildren working at home or in the business workplace, hormonal changes, pregnancies, divorce, separation ~ often all at the same time.

     Life is often stressful in many ways.

I support them in finding solutions from a wellness perspective (health & emotional).  Having a background in Counseling Psychology, Nutrition and Naturopathy as well as Energy Medicine, provides me with a full spectrum to understand the complexity of the issues and offer solutions.  My study with amino acids really helped some of my clients who had biochemical/electrical imbalances, and using bio resonance I could investigate which amino acids would help to balance them naturally. 

My Biggest Challenge

Wow, my life has been busy.  One of my challenges was raising my daughters as a single mom while moving from the Boston area to Southern California to start an engineering software company with an associate. For 20 years, I worked in engineering, designing electronics, managing a computer graphics center for Bell Labs, then moving to California to start a company selling engineering software to sell to companies like Boeing, the Navy, Hughes Aircraft, Rockwell International and many more.  That turned into a multi-million-dollar corporation until my business partner died of lung cancer.  Such an exciting time that ended sadly. I later worked as a Director of Product Marketing for a computer graphics company and left after two years to begin my journey in counseling and natural health that has now lasted for 25 years. Luckily, I had two beautiful daughters who often travelled with me.  We had lots of fun together and celebrated life. Each part of my life has a story – as do we all.  How we get through it one step at a time during challenging/ growth times and celebrating while things are going well.

Recent Success

I had an amazing client, age 80, who had a stroke 8 years prior to seeing me.  She was exhausted, walked with a limp and could not drive, and was sad and depressed. I worked with her diet and nutritional supplements to improve her memory and energy levels.  We measured her meridians and over time saw great improvements in her conductivity. What impressed me so much was that she was committed, and so positive and focused.  This provided the stimulus for her to drive again, increase her energy levels and improve her memory greatly. She was such a gift in that she walked her talk.  She worked the program we put together, and she inspired me every two weeks with her story.  One amazing woman. 

What Keeps You Going 

Well, I love what I do and I enjoy helping people, so it is a win / win.  Profits are important certainly, since I am operating a business, yet so is helping people.  Satisfied clients are my best advertisement.  I have always loved learning and consider myself the perpetual student.  This really supports me in keeping up with the changes in the natural health arena. 

Fun, exciting and time consuming, but so beneficial when I see someone attain their health goals and feel better.

Community First

I like to think that I am a resource for natural health in my area to support those who also believe in natural ways to stay healthy or regain their health. Well, I am busy, so I have not done a lot of volunteer work.  Being a sole proprietor, wearing many hats keeps me busy full time. I do attend some local events, yet my clients often travel from other cities to experience what I do. I have clients in many states, so that is fun as well.

In Five Years…

Still learning, investigating, purchasing equipment and learning philosophies to help my clients.  I would love to attend the European Academy next year on Energetic Medicine.  So much to always learn and I love it all. I have just started up my newsletter again and hope to attract new clients and continue to support my current client base.

I’m Inspired By

I think inspiration is part of my gene pool.  My grandfather had a design for the first airplane and met with the Wright Brothers.  Guess, they all inspired each other.  His son, my dad, was a toolmaker and designer.  He designed intricate tools to work on aircraft, and had many hobbies and was always building things, doing crafts or playing music with us. My grandmother got polio in the mid 1920’s and her older daughter, age 12 also had polio.  My mom, the next oldest had to take care of the house and her two younger brothers, while her mom and sister went through rehab. Tough on a 10-year-old girl, but she did it. My grandmother was an amazingly positive person and was always full of inspiration while I was growing up.  She lived in a wheelchair for 40 years prior to passing away.  And there was not anything this woman could not do.  My mom was amazing as well.  A good businesswoman and counselor to all my friends and a great mom.  There are so many other friends and relatives I have who have been inspirations to me as well.

Make sure that you are following your desired path; one that provides passion and continued curiosity in your life and in your business.

If you are in a service business, it is about your clients.  What do they need or want that you can help them with?  They hired you, so it is important to stay focused in being supportive with their goals. 

Offer quality in all you do.  Be enthusiastic and listen well.  Offer solutions and let them decide, then focus on helping them attain their goals.

I started my business MJC Consulting in November 2017. After 20 years of corporate life already at the age of 40, I was hitting a wall. My mental health started to take a toll. When I left, I was in an Administrator-level position making six figures but was so unhappy. EAP didn’t help, HR didn’t help, Leadership did not help. So I decided that I wanted to provide those types of services to others who may be struggling in the corporate world and need new and innovative ideas to manage every day. 

I also want to provide small business tools that will help train, teach, and coach their employees in how to manage issues and barriers they may face in an office environment.

My Biggest Challenge

I had to overcome self-doubt professionally.

 

I was a teenage Mom who took 12 years to get my MBA going to school on and off while my daughter was growing up. My whole career every goal I set I achieved. Every position or job I wanted I achieved, every time I set goals on a salary increase, I achieved, but I still didn’t believe in myself. At the end of my corporate life, I was still looking for validation of my work and knowledge from others, when I should have been validating myself, proving to myself.

Recent Success

   I recently received emails from clients I did some interviewing prep and helped update their resumes.

All clients got the jobs!

   All of them were not confident at first; they knew how to do the job. They just needed some coaching on how to present themselves.

 

How We Keep Going

 

   My Clients keep me going. When I get to experience their ah-ha moments with them its amazing. Watching them achieve their goals with a little help from me, makes me feel like I made the right decision.
